OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition First Impressions
October 11, 2019
Over the years, OnePlus has released a small number of special edition versions of its smartphones, and one of the coolest of them has to be the McLaren Edition (Review) of the OnePlus 6T. This was the phone that debuted the company's Warp Charge 30 fast charging technology, and there was no beating that slick paint job at the time. OnePlus has now launched a McLaren Edition of the OnePlus 7T Pro at a price of Rs. 58,999 and here's a quick look at what's new and different compared to the standard version.
Starting with the packaging, the box comes in an orange wrapper, inspired by the signature McLaren ‘papaya orange' colour. The actual box inside has a black carbon fibre look, with just the OnePlus and McLaren logos. Inside, we have some pamphlets with orange accents, but interestingly, no OnePlus logo or even McLaren stickers.
The charger and data cable also get special treatment. We have a black 30W charger and an orange braided cable, instead of the signature red rubber-coated one that the company usually ships with its phones. The quality of the accessories is top-notch, and all of them match the racing-inspired theme of this phone.
The bundled case for the McLaren Edition 7T Pro is also unique, and is placed in a separate compartment on the bottom of the box. This hard plastic case is lined with Alcantara, which is a soft and durable fabric material, typically used on the insides of sports cars to give them a premium feel.
OnePlus calls the device's finish ‘Papaya Orange' but the phone is actually all black, with orange accents around the camera bump, the alert slider, and the lower back of the phone. The glass back is glossy with a wood-grain-like pattern, unlike the matte finish of the standard OnePlus 7T Pro. It's also more prone to attracting fingerprints.
Honestly, at first sight, we thought the pattern on the rear was an imprint from the plastic covering the phone came wrapped in, or some sort of smudge. The pattern is clearly visible around the camera bump but then fades out. It actually extends all the way down to the McLaren logo at the bottom, but its outer edges are only visible when holding this phone against the light at certain angles.
This OnePlus 7T Pro features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor and 256GB of storage like its standard counterpart, but the RAM has been bumped up to 12GB. Other than this, there are no changes to the specifications of the McLaren Edition.
When you power it on, you'll notice a special McLaren UI theme. This includes custom wallpapers, animations, a clock face for the always-on display, a new fingerprint recognition animation, and a special papaya orange ‘horizon light' effect when you get a notification. The new fingerprint animation is something we especially liked, as it mimics the after-burn of a sportscar. Overall, OxygenOS with this theme looks slick.
In terms of performance, the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition feels incredibly fluid and snappy. Its 90Hz AMOLED display is bright and vibrant. Apps and games are also quick to load.
The McLaren Edition of the OnePlus 7T Pro is meant for hardcore racing fans who want a piece of the McLaren racing DNA in their smartphone. This is no doubt a well-crafted phone with a unique style, which fans might appreciate. We think OnePlus could have done better with the design at the back of the phone, though, but that's just our opinion.

High-Protein Diet: 5 Protein-Rich Nuts And Seeds You Can Munch On Through The Day
September 12, 2019
Think protein and one of the first things to appear in mind is chicken, or some eggs, milk, fish or red meat. While it is true that they are perhaps some of the best sources of protein available, if you look around you would learn that there is so much you are missing out on. Healthy seeds have become a rage in the world of health and nutrition. For the uninitiated, some seeds are a good source of antioxidants and minerals. We have a habit of tossing away seeds the moment we spot them in fruits, but guess what; you can store some of these seeds and have them as snacks.
Snacking is a crucial component of weight loss. Snacking need not always be unhealthy. In fact, if you keep nibbling on something healthy and protein-rich every two-three hours, you could even lose weight in a more sustainable manner. Protein helps induce satiety. If you are feeling full, it is natural that you would eat in a controlled manner. If you binge less, you stand a greater chance at quicker weight loss.

Amazon Echo Show 5 Review
August 30, 2019
The Amazon Echo series of smart speakers are typically focused on Alexa, the company's AI-based voice assistant. Using the speaker involves a lot of voice commands, but one recent product in the range, the Amazon Echo Show, also added a visual element. While we quite liked the Echo Show, its Rs. 22,999 price tag was a bit too high to consider it anything more than a niche product for early adopters.
It seems that Amazon is listening, and has now launched the Echo Show 5, a smaller and much more affordable smart display and speaker. It's like the larger Echo Show in many ways, but has a much more attractive Rs. 8,999 price tag, and Amazon hopes this will make it easier for buyers to adopt its screen-and-voice model of interacting with Alexa. Let's dive right in and take a closer look at the Amazon Echo Show 5.
Amazon Echo Show 5 design and specifications
The Amazon Echo Show 5 is, at its core, the same as the larger Echo Show in its positioning; it can be considered a smart display but is more aptly described as a smart speaker with a screen for additional cues and information. It would even fit the description of a very technologically advanced table-top clock, if that's what you would want to use it for.
The most significant difference between the Echo Show 5 and its larger and more expensive counterpart is size — this new model is much smaller, with a 5.5-inch touchscreen and a single 1.65-inch speaker driver for sound. The screen has an 18:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 960x480 pixels, which is a lot smaller and more compact than the tablet-like 10.1-inch, 16:10 screen on the Amazon Echo Show.
The smaller size makes the Echo Show 5 more convenient for table-top use. This design is good for basic functions, including serving as a clock, displaying the weather, and providing visual cues such as track name and album art when listening to music. While we did like the convenience of this size, the screen was a bit too small for viewing across a regular-sized room.
At 5.5 inches, the Echo Show 5's screen is smaller than those on a lot of smartphones today, and we could barely read any text on it unless we went right up to the device. The touchscreen can be used to control some basic settings on the Amazon Echo Show 5, such as brightness and the do not disturb status.
In terms of design, the Echo Show 5 has the same general look and feel as its bigger sibling, with the screen tilted slightly upwards and the back of the device wrapped in fabric. The speaker grille is at the bottom, below the screen, and fires directly at the surface the Echo Show 5 is placed on. There is rubber for grip at the bottom of the device, and three buttons at the top — one to activate or disable the microphones, and two to control the volume. There is also a slider switch that controls a physical cover for the 1-megapixel camera.
The camera switch comes as a response to various privacy concerns, including those in recent reports about AI-based assistants, and a physical cover certainly negates any possibility of the Echo Show 5 seeing and recording something it shouldn't. However, disabling the microphones is still a software-based function, and you're just going to have to trust Amazon when it says they are off.
There are two microphones at the top of the Echo Show 5, placed between the three buttons. The back of the device has a round power socket for the included adapter, a 3.5mm audio-out socket to send audio to a speaker system or headphones, and a Micro-USB port, which can be used for wired Internet connectivity (using an appropriate adapter) and for service-related functions.
The sales package of the Amazon Echo Show 5 includes only a power adapter with a fixed 1.5m cable, along with the device itself. It relies on Wi-Fi connectivity for its core Alexa and content streaming functions, but you can also connect to devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers using Bluetooth to play your own music. The device is powered by the MediaTek MT8163 processor.

Skin Health: Eat Fruits And Veggies Rich In Vitamin A To Reduce Risk Of Skin Cancer, Says Study
August 02, 2019
Among some of the most essential vitamins required by the body for smooth functioning of organs is Vitamin A. The vitamin is responsible, in particular for protecting the eyes from damage and maintaining health of the vision. It has also been credited with skin health and keeping acne and other skin problems at bay and it is also said to help with keeping immunity levels up. Vitamin A has also been linked with reduced risk of certain types of cancers and a new study has backed this up. The study says that higher intake of vitamin A may reduce a person's chances of having skin cancer. It indicated that diets with high levels of Vitamin A in them may be linked with significantly lower risks of skin cancer, as compared to diets low in this Vitamin.
The study titled, "Association of Vitamin A Intake With Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma Risk in the United States" was published in Journal of the American Medical Association Dermatology in July 2019. The study was conducted by researchers at brown University, who looked at data from two long-term observational studies and unearthed a link between Vitamin A intake and incidence of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. This type of cancer is the second most common type of skin cancer among people with fair skins. Earlier scientists have believed Vitamin A as an essential nutrient for the growth and maturation of skin cells.
Vitamin A is found in a number of fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly orange and red coloured fruits and vegetables. The scientists said that adding these foods to your diet may be an effective way of reducing risk of squamous cell carcinoma, which they said is hard to prevent. The study concluded by saying, "This study suggests that increased intake of dietary vitamin A is associated with decreased risk of incident SCC. Future studies are needed to determine whether vitamin A supplementation has a role in chemoprevention of SCC."

WhatsApp Multi-Platform System Confirmed, Will Allow Same Account to Run on Many Devices: WABetaInfo
July 30, 2019
WhatsApp was recently rumoured to bring a multi-platform system, enabling users to activate one account on a lot of devices. WhatsApp features tracker WABetaInfo now says that this is no longer a rumour, and is confirmed news. The tracker hasn't mentioned any other details like launch timeline or a screenshots to support the claim, but just says that the multi-platform system feature is indeed in the works. WABetaInfo says that this includes WhatsApp for Windows (UWP), which brings the ability to use WhatsApp on your PC as well.
The tracker says that the multi-platform system will work on iPhone, Android, iPad, and even WhatsApp for Windows (UWP) whenever it arrives. This means that users will be able to use the same WhatsApp account on multiple devices, without being kicked out of the main one. Users will be able to use their WhatsApp account on iPad (when the app becomes available) without uninstalling it from their iPhone. Similarly, the same WhatsApp account can be used on iOS and Android devices as well.
This feature was first spoken about alongside iOS beta 2.19.80.16. At that time, the tracker said that the feature is rumoured as there weren't any screenshots to support the claim. However, now that the multi-platform system is said to be confirmed, it could mean that WABetaInfo will share screenshots soon. The tracker had also said that ‘with the new system, WhatsApp is also improving their end-to-end encryption, because probably something needs to be changed, seen that the messages must be sent to more devices.'
As explained above, this feature will also enable users to be able to use WhatsApp on their computer, without the necessity for an Internet connection on the phone, by using the UWP app that has been rumoured for a while now. Furthermore, it will also be possible to use the same account on Windows Phone and WhatsApp for Windows.

Pokemon Masters to Release on Android and iOS This Summer
July 02, 2019
Pokemon Masters, a new game made by Nintendo partner DeNa, is coming to Android and iOS platforms this summer. The company released a trailer of the new game, and even announced its launch timeline. Pokemon Masters is essentially focused on battles, rather than capturing Pokemon, and it allows you to befriend trainers as well, to team up and battle alongside. The game is set on an artificial island called Pasio, and trainers on the island are aiming to become the champions of the Pokemon Masters League.
In this game, users will find trainers with single Pokemon that are travelling along with them across the island. These duos are called Sync Pairs, and throughout the game, users will meet many such sync pairs with whom they can form a team to battle in the league. To qualify for the Pokemon Masters League, this team has to collect badges along their journey, the game's micro-site reveals. There are real-time 3 vs 3 matches as well that will earn them rewards. Battles have Pokemon showing off different kind of moves like sync moves and move gauge to make the game a little more enticing. Even trainers have moves, and players can choose from a range of sync pairs to make their dream team and journey towards the Pokemon Masters League.
Producer of the game, Yun Sasaki, says in the trailer that the aim while making the game was "to create a game that lets anyone casually pick up their phone and enjoy Pokemon battles." The game will be released on Google Play and App Store both. To recall, Nintendo had collaborated with Japan's DeNa way back in 2015 to develop mobile games from its many popular franchises.
It's been a good run for the Pokemon franchise, after the success of the Pokemon Go game.

Asus ROG Phone 2 to Ship With a 120Hz Display, Optimised Games Said to Be in the Pipeline
June 14, 2019
The first major feature of the upcoming gaming phone Asus ROG Phone 2 has been confirmed. Asus has revealed that the ROG Phone 2 will feature a 120Hz display. This information comes via a Weibo poster for Asus' partnership with a Chinese fighting game called Under the One Man, based on the comic book franchise of the same name, published by Tencent Games. Asus' ROG team has already confirmed that the successor to its ROG Phone would be released in July, and had also announced its partnership with Tencent Games for future devices and content. It is unclear when the gaming smartphone will be making its debut in India.
In a post on Weibo, the company confirms that the Asus ROG Phone₹ 69,999 2 will have a 120Hz display, which it claims will be ideal for the upcoming Under the One Man game. It goes on to say that a 120Hz display is suitable for fighting games, giving players a "more delicate and refreshing fighting experience" (as per Google Translate). It added that "more popular 120Hz games" are coming soon. The collaboration between Tencent Games and Asus collaboration will bring games that are optimised for ROG Phone 2, is something we knew from earlier.
To recall, it was previously announced that ROG Phone 2 would be launched in July. Asus' tie-up with Tencent had also been announced earlier. This could help the company drive up sales of the Asus ROG Phone series, which have not been great so far.
It's worth noting that the recently launched OnePlus 7 Pro₹ 48,999 has a 90Hz display and the Razer Phone 2 launched last year has a 120Hz display. It'll be interesting to see how the upcoming ROG Phone 2 fares against these smartphones, apart from other gaming phones such as the Black Shark 2.
The first Asus ROG Phone was launched in India in November 2018 at Rs. 69,999. In our review of the ROG Phone we praised its performance and battery life, but said we weren't too pleased with ROG UI — the interface the phone uses on top of Android. The ROG Phone has a nice gaming mode that dedicates more of the phone's resources to the game you're playing, which could lead to better performance. We could expect to see this in the Asus ROG Phone 2.
Another interesting feature of the ROG Phone was the fact that Asus had cherry-picked Snapdragon 845 SoCs and clocked them to 2.96GHz to deliver better performance. There's a good chance that the ROG Phone 2 ships with a Snapdragon 855 SoC and it will be interesting to see whether Asus overclocks it before shipping the phone.

Destiny 2 Becomes Free-to-Play, Cross Save Support and Shadowkeep Expansion Announced
June 10, 2019
Ahead of E3 2019, Bungie has made some major announcements regarding their hit FPS game, Destiny 2. Bungie has revealed the next major expansion for the game called Destiny 2: Shadowkeep, which succeeds the Forsaken expansion that arrived last year. Moreover, Destiny 2 is transitioning from the Battle.net platform and will soon arrive on Steam. Additionally, Bungie has announced that Destiny 2 will support cross save across supported platforms such as PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Google's Stadia game streaming service. Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, with the arrival of Destiny 2: Shadowkeep, the core game - including all year-one content - will become free-to-play and will go by the name Destiny 2: New Light.
Starting with the Shadowkeep expansion, not much is known about the storyline except that it will take the heroes to the moon and will mark the return of a character named Eris Morn. “Return to the Moon. Journey deep into a mysterious enemy citadel. Help Eris slay these nightmares before they reach out beyond the Moon to cast humanity back into an age of darkness”, reads Destiny 2: Shadowkeep's description on the Bungie website.
Destiny 2: Shadowkeep arrives on September 17, and is now available for pre-purchase on supported platforms such as PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The new expansion will be available in three bundles – Destiny 2: Shadowkeep Standard Edition, Destiny 2: Shadowkeep Digital Deluxe Edition, and Destiny 2: Shadowkeep Collector's Edition. The latter is priced at $149.99 (roughly Rs. 10,400) and includes new missions, quests, destinations, and dungeons arriving with the Shadowkeep expansion, four season passes, exclusive Eris Morn themed items, and a digital code for Destiny 2 Deluxe Edition.
Talking about the availability, the game's arrival on Steam is big news and is expected to help Bungie rope in more new players. Previously, Destiny 2 was available on Battle.net platform, but in the wake of Bungie obtaining the rights for the Destiny franchise from Activision earlier this year, the game's developer is now free to move away from Activision Blizzard's Battle.net platform and move to the greener Steam pasture. Destiny 2: Shadowkeep will hit Steam on September 17. But that's not all. Bungie will allow players to move "current characters, gear, and progress from Blizzard's Battle.net to Steam."
But Bungie is not just content with Destiny 2's arrival on Steam, as the developer also wants to get more players hooked to the game. To achieve that objective, the core Destiny 2 game will become free-to-play under the name Destiny 2: New Light. The new avatar of the game will go live on September 17 for players on all supported platforms.
Destiny 2: New Light is set to offer all the content that arrived within the first year of the game's arrival such as cooperative quests, competitive modes, challenging endgame activities, and more. With the move, the core game is free-to-play, and all further expansions (and other content released later) will be available on a paid basis. Players also do not need to own previous expansions to play new ones. Notably, Destiny 2 was made free for PC users for a brief period last year after BlizzCon.
